3rd CSD Annual Conference on Sustainable Development

Collaborations for Change: Integrating Sustainability Research Into Policy and Practice

The 3rd CSD Annual Conference on Sustainable Development 2018, organized by CSD-ULAB, will bring together local and international experts from across the globe to share and learn about transdisciplinary research on climate change migration, urbanization, building a green economy and natural resource management. There is strong focus on fostering collaboration between crosscutting disciplines such as anthropology, urban planning, climate and natural sciences, and economics/business studies.

This interdisciplinary conference places a strong emphasis on public policy impact, identifying cutting edge research with clear and urgent implications for the current national andinternational policy debate, as well as on achieving several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Objectives of the Conference:

  • To serve as an incubator for current research results and to facilitate the uptake of these new results into practice at the local, national and international policy level;
  • To highlight the latest information on four inter- and transdisciplinary topics: climate induced migration, the nexus between urbanization and sustainability, building a green economy and natural resource management
  • To identify key knowledge gaps and solutions;
  • To promote collaborations, and
  • To stimulate uptake of the science into policy and action.

The conference will also bring together academics, national and international policymakers, and grassroots organizations, who are in the frontline of climate-resilient agriculture and livelihoods project implementation in Bangladesh.  Additional panel sessions will explore issues of sustainability in project design and execution, providing a rich discussion and knowledge platform on the progress and pitfalls of designing meaningful projects with long term sustainability and impact.

Side events will include a youth-led campus sustainability programme with photography and posters, as well as a display of local vendors promoting sustainable consumption and production. There will also be a book launch of The Environmental Sustainable Goals of Bangladesh published by Taylor and Francis Routledge Group, which is the product of last year’s conference, and which examined eight of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Center for Sustainable Development, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (CSD, ULAB) and United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) are pleased to announce a call for abstracts addressing the following issues relating to the theme of Climate Change and Migration:

  • The factors that shape individuals / households’ decisions to migrate in the presence of climatic changes
  • The resulting possibilities and implications for adaptation to cope with climatic changes
  • The conditions under which individuals/households/communities are more likely to become ‘trapped’ due to climatic changes
  • The risks and opportunities for both integration and urban resilience arising from rural-to-urban environmental migration in the Global South
  • The security implications of rural-to-urban environmental migration

This interdisciplinary conference places a strong emphasis on public policy impact, identifying cutting edge research with clear and urgent implications for the current international policy debate.

Authors of work that demonstrates the required relevance to current international policy debates on climate change, migration and urbanization will have return airfare and accommodation in Dhaka paid for.

At the conference, a team of leading experts will decide the winning presentation. The author/s  will then be invited to present their research to policy makers at a high-level event organized by UN Environment in 2019.

Living within our environmental limits is one of the central principles of sustainable development. Environmental sustainable development involves making decisions and taking action that are in the interests of protecting the natural world, with particular emphasis on preserving the capability of the environment to support human life. For environment conservation and development to go hand in hand, it needs to include people and society as a whole. Individuals, communities and policy makers need to change behaviour and make policy changes that will reduce environmental degradation, halt biodiversity loss and allow for sustainable development.

This session will focus on the links between science, policy and practices and generate knowledge around successes and challenges of integrating environment conservation and sustainable development. This will be done through sharing research findings, case studies, and outcomes of natural resource conservation and management projects. This session is for researchers, private sector, policy makers and practitioners from any professional discipline who share an interest in and concern for biodiversity and natural resource management that is win-win for both human development and nature conservation.

This interdisciplinary conference places a strong emphasis on public policy impact, identifying cutting edge research with clear and urgent implications for the local and international policy debate.

Workshop on Youth Leadership and Sustainability

Please see the detail of this Workshop : Youth Leadership and Sustainability.

Investing in youth is an investment in our future. It is also fundamental for the successful implementation of the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Young people today are not just recipients of knowledge and values; they have become agents of change through their social awareness and knowledge in new technologies. Their leadership in their own local contexts has shown to be remarkable, and we believe young people have the potential to design sustainable initiatives in their educational institutions, homes and communities.

Going further, Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education – and achieving its targets becomes a priority as it will enable young people to take their future into their own hands with dignity, freedom and responsibility. The challenge for young leaders then, is to design a new educational paradigm that integrates sustainability in education and lifestyle. Therefore, the proper valuation of educational initiatives and our moral obligation towards caring for our planet requires an “ecological conversion” and the participation of young people in global leadership. In this context, this workshop has been designed to promote importance of campus sustainability, in order to engage youth in achieving sustainable development goals. We believe higher education institutions can acts as agents in promoting The Role of Universities in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals within society.

This workshop will be conducted in conjunction with Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative and Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center and has two parts where the selected participants from different universities will work in different groups that relate to 8 SDGs to learn about –

  1. Role of Campus Sustainability in achieving SDGs
  2. Role of Youth Leadership to implement Sustainability both at campus and outside

If you want to attend the workshop, send a short essay on the following topic (Word Limit: Max 700 words)
